Emergency Water Heater Service in Jacksonville

A water heater holds 40 to 80 gallons, and a failed tank can keep refilling from your water line until someone shuts it off. If water is on the floor right now, do the steps below first, then call.

Water pooling on a garage floor around the base of a leaking water heater

What to do right now if your water heater is leaking

  • Turn off the cold water supply valve on the pipe going into the top of the tank
  • For an electric heater, turn off its breaker in the electrical panel
  • For a gas heater, turn the gas control knob to “Off” or “Pilot”
  • If you can’t find the heater’s valve, shut off the main water to the house
  • Move anything that can be damaged away from the water
  • Don’t touch electrical equipment while standing in water

If you smell gas

Leave the house, don’t flip switches or use a phone inside, and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. A plumber can repair the heater once the gas utility has made the area safe.

What counts as an emergency

  • Water leaking from the tank and you can’t stop it
  • Water spreading toward flooring, drywall, or electrical equipment
  • Scalding water or a relief valve that keeps discharging
  • No hot water when you have small children, older family members, or someone recovering from illness at home

Emergency Water Heater Service: common questions

Can I keep using my water heater if it’s leaking?

If the leak is from the tank body, no. Shut it off and replace it. If it’s from a fitting or the relief valve, it may be repairable, but it should be checked soon.

Why is water coming out of the pipe on the side of my water heater?

That’s the temperature and pressure relief valve doing its job, or failing. It can mean the water is too hot, pressure is too high, or the valve is worn out. Have it checked rather than capping the line.

Do you handle after-hours calls?

Call any time. You’ll be connected with a local plumber who can tell you what can be done tonight and what can safely wait until morning.
